Nintendo has recently released the newest addition to its popular line of DS handheld gaming consoles, the DSi XL. This personal gaming system, which will retail for $189.99, comes in Burgundy or Bronze. It is a larger version of the wildly popular Nintendo DSi, featuring two 4.2-inch screens, which are 93% larger than screens found on the original DSi. The new screens also boast much better viewing angles from the sides. And while most DS games are not really intended for multiple players, new games released for the DSi XL games will be able to take advantage of these better side angles.
The DSi XL comes with the familiar small stylus that can be stored within the device, but also includes a longer, pen-like stylus, which is definitely more comfortable if you are going to be playing for a long time. The XL also comes preloaded with Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math, and Photo Clock, as well as two free applications: the Nintendo DSi Browser and Flipnote Studio.
We were recently able to check out a few new games that will play on all of the DS consoles, but they'll really work best on the DSi XL.
WarioWare: DIY Showcase features over 70 micro-games and a cool new DIY feature that lets players create their own games; it will also be playable on a Nintendo Wii.
We also saw America's Test Kitchen: Let's Get Cooking, based on the eponymous television show. That game features 300 recipes, cooking tutorial videos, and step-by-step recipe walkthroughs. I especially liked how the game will read the directions out loud as you cook. It also has shopping lists for you to take with you to the grocery store.
Nintendo is also launching several new Pokemon titles to go with the DSi XL. We got to play with Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver. Both games feature all 493 Pokemons, but the main new feature is the Pokewalker that come with the games.
Pokewalker allows you to transfer captured Pokemon from your DSi to a small "Tamagotchi-like" device that looks like a digital watch without the band. This allows you to take a Pokemon with you and exercise it. The more walks you take and the farther you go, the more powerful it gets. Once it gets enough strength, you can find objects with the Pokewalker and capture wild Pokemon with it.
The DSi XL's suggested retail price of $189.99 puts it at about the same price point as the Wii and the Xbox 360. However, for a limited time, you can get your DSi XL absolutely free, just by registering here.

Nintendo, one of the best-recognized leaders in the gaming industry, recently released the latest addition to their family of personal gaming systems, the DSi XL. In many ways, the DSi XL is similar to the Nintendo DSi, with the same built-in wireless capabilities, microphone, cameras, and touch-sensitive lower screen. However, the DSi XL boasts a screen size of 4.2 inches -- 93% larger than the ones found on the DS Lite.
Not intended to replace the DSi, the DSi XL offers the same display resolution, despite its larger size. This gives the XL screen a tendency to appear slightly "soft-edged" or even a bit blocky. Rumor has it that both the DSi and the DSi XL will remain on the market for the foreseeable future, thus giving the consumer a choice between the larger and smaller screen formats.
However, the extra screen size can offer a significant advantage when playing certain games. It's much easier to read on-screen text, for instance. Nevertheless, in many other respects, the DSi XL is very similar to the DSi. The camera function comes with some basic editing and sharing options, allowing you to distort or add an effect to your shot before uploading it to Facebook, for example. You can also record, edit and playback audio. An SD memory slot allows for pictures and recordings to be transferred to a computer. You can also use the system as a rudimentary music player by storing tracks on the memory card. Connect to the internet and you can play certain games online or use the DSi shop to obtain downloadable games.
In addition to the regular DSi features, however, the XL model has a few other things up its sleeve, including a larger pen-like stylus, which can be more comfortable to hold for long periods than the older model. The device also comes with some additional software built in: a web browser and three games.
The unit is considerably larger than its predecessors, but the DSi XL is clearly aimed at more mature users who are perhaps not as concerned with portability. To reflect this, the device is available in two rather grown-up colors: Burgundy and Bronze.
We wouldn't go so far as to say that the DSi XL is the definitive winner in Nintendo's handheld gaming family, but the larger screens certainly make it an attractive alternative. And with a price point only about $20 higher than the original DSi, it's affordable too.
